What Do You Know About Benue Hills? Let Me Show You Some Interesting Facts!

Among the several tourist sites located in Benue State, the Hills of Benue are some of the most fascinating tourist attractions in Benue State. Geographically located in the middle belt of the country, Benue State, popularly referred to as “the food basket of the nation” was named after the Benue River and was formed from the former Benue-Plateau state in 1976 alongside Igala and some parts of Kwara State. The state has a population of more than 4,253,641 people. The capital of Benue is Makurdi, a rich agricultural region that supplies the nation with food. Crops such as potatoes, cassava, soya bean, guinea corn, groundnuts and majorly yam are grown in commercial quantity.

Most of the spectacular Hills include ranges located at Ushongo Local Government, Ikyogen (Leiv) Mountain, Abande, Ngokur, Mkar, and Harga. Most located near Gboko and some near the border between the state and Cameroon. The Hills feature some of the country’s most beautiful scenery and nature. Two of its most famous are the Ushongo hills and Leiv Mountain.

In Ushongo Local government Area are a collection of hills which gives the area a beautiful hilly landscape. The biggest of them is known as the Ushongo hill. It is the pride of the Ushongo people and a monument of the Usman Dan Fodio war. At the top of the hill, a picnic is held every yuletide season where locals and visitors make merry with music and food. The Ushongo hill has a conducive climate which makes it a gratifying spot for tourists. It is easy to climb among other hills and the weather is quite favourable.

Leiv Mountain, popularly known as the Ikyogen hill is located in Mbabegh Ikyogen, Kwande local government area of Benue state. The lush green leiv mountain used to be a habitat for monkeys and a grazing ranch for cattle but overtime it has become deserted. During the unrest in Cameroon, the hill served as a temporary camp for the Cameroonian refugees but even long after the camp was relocated, this tourist site and attraction never regained its lost glory. Locals who live around however still find hiking on Leiv Mountain recreational. Ikyogen hills exudes mild weather conditions, and this ensures steady green vegetation and a year-round grazing for animals around these areas.

Oguta: A Source of Livelihood

Oguta Lake is the largest natural lake in South-Eastern Nigeria. It is located in a natural depression within the extended east bank floodplain of the River Niger downstream of Onitsha. The lake is in the Oguta Local Government Area in the western part of Imo State in Nigeria, which has a population of 22,298 people.  It is within the Rain Forest though the original forests around the lake have since been replaced by oil palm groves. The town of Oguta is situated on the east bank of the lake.

A source of livelihood

The lake is of immense importance to the people of Oguta, Orsu, Nkwesi and Awo. It is the source of municipal and domestic water, while some community members worship a deity associated with it. In addition, it sustains tourism and fishery business, and it is the channel for urban sewage for the community. With the lake being the identity and pride of the Ogutaman. They draw their water and obtain 80% of their protein from it.

Oguta Lake receives recurrent inflow from Rivers Utu, Awbuna and Njaba, which have their source in the Awka-Orlu slope in North Central of Imo State. It also receives the overflow from the river Niger. It drains into the River Orashi, a focal river on the eastern bank water meadow of the river Niger, which carries river Niger’s floodwaters directly to the Niger delta.

Oguta Lake has a maximum depth of 8.0 m and a mean depth of 5.5 m, Water level varies over a range of 2.7m between the two seasons that occur in this part of the world and there are 40 fish species in the lake.

The Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC) is one of the most visited nature reserves in Nigeria. It is a scenic area that offers a few well-appreciated hours of getaway from the busy life in Lagos.

The Centre was commissioned in 1990 and has since then become one of the most conspicuous modern nature parks in Africa.

The Experience

One of the many reasons people love to visit is because the centre has the longest canopy walk in Africa, which is 401m long and was launched in 2015.

To take on that climb you have to be prepared physically and mentally. This is because the higher you go, the more difficult it gets to hold yourself together.  To climb the canopy, you have to read the rules and agree to them. Afterwhich you then obtain a wrist tag that will identify you as a climber.

Also at Lekki Conservation Centre, you get to see the giant tortoise which is ninety-five years old and roams freely within the walls of LCC.

Tourists take pictures with it and post on their social media, albeit when the tortoise comes out to play. Other animals like monkeys, peacock, crocodiles in the water, and snakes on the trees are also found in LCC.

 

Besides the beautiful natural view the LCC has to offer, it offers you a life-sized chess board and for chess lovers.

Arinta Waterfalls is located in Ipole-Iloro and it is about 6km North-West of Ikogosi. It can only be reached through a road from Ikogosi. The road that leads to the fall passes through the Ikogosi Tourist Center. Tourists feel the cold effect of this fall from about 10 meters away.

 

Nature’s Beauty

The resort centre is naturally gifted with thick and evergreen forest. Arinta waterfall is a wonderful scene to feast your eyes on, surging down rocky hills from a great height to form a graceful pool of spring water in the midst of natural forest vegetation. It is a popular tourist site that draws local and foreign tourists to the State.

The precipitous slopes of the intimidating ridge, views of a beautiful valley trapped between two ridges meet the eyes. The scenery features an extensive area of rich vegetation. The afternoon sun energized the greenery flavour of the valley below, forming it in a pleasant romance of bright and dark shades of leaf green. The tarred road descends down the other side of the ridge to meet the sleepy enclave of Ipole-Iloro. A small stream meets the road at the village entrance. It is called Oluwa stream, and being highly-revered by the people, it is said that the water can cure any kind of diseases.

 

The Town

The town holds a total human population of about eight hundred people. The Aayo spring can be seen zigzagging its way across the village, dividing the village into two parts. The first part towards the south holds the area where the ancestors of Ipole-Iloro people first dwelt before expansion took the boundaries of the village beyond the river to the other side.

Ebomi Lake, also known as the Bottomless Lake is a 1.5 km long body of water, located in the sleepy reserve of Ipesi Akoko, along the northeastern border of Ondo State, South-West Nigeria.

 

The lake is also called “the bottomless lake” because of its depth, which has been difficult to approximate or estimate. It stretches through a distance of almost 2km and is about 45m wide. According to oral history, which was passed down through the years.

It is said that when the people of Ipesi Akoko arrived at their present ancestral home, they met the Ebomi Lake at Ipesi. They couldn’t find the appropriate words to describe their curiosity about the topographies of the lake, they decided to call the weirdly wide body of water ”Abami’, which literally means ‘mysterious’. This name, with time, changed to “Ebomi” which is the name it is being called to this day.
A package of enticements has been presented to provide a satisfactory climate for the establishment of industries by prospective investors in Ondo State.

The lake, according to the residents of Ipesi Akoko, has supernatural powers for protecting the villagers during the times of war. The lake is believed to have unseen soldiers that fight battles for the Ipesi people. In addition, it is also believed that the lake’s deities give the villagers different gifts such as children, fishes, fowls amongst others.

 

Common wildlife sightings around the lake include antelopes, bush pigs, mischievous squirrels, variety of birds and fishes, which all give photographers and nature-loving tourists an unlimited scope to savour.
